Prioritising Local Jobs

A Liberal-led Government will progress a public float of 51% of Western Power, with the proceeds used to create thousands of jobs and stimulate our local economy by building the WA’s future infrastructure needs.

This is going to be done, without electricity prices rising or jobs being lost as Western Power as a result of the public listing. Many in the Baldivis electorate have indicated they support the public float of 51% of Western Power. What are your thoughts on the float?

Let Malcolm Know

HOW ARE WE GOING TO CREATE JOBS?

The Liberal-led State Government is expecting to raise $11 billion from the partial sale of Western Power. Of this $11 billion, about $8 billion will go towards pay down state debt.”

The remaining $3 billion will go into a special account called the “Next Generation Account” which is specifically designed to fund long-term investment. This will mean we’re going to see significant investment in initial priority areas of schools and TAFE facilities, transport infrastructure.

That means we can fix some local primary schools, build new roads and help energise our State’s economy. These projects will create thousands of jobs in our community. This decision is going to mean new jobs for builders, tradies, construction workers, engineers, technology providers, and their support staff in our community.”

WHY DO THIS?

The decision today to fund $3 billion in long term infrastructure investments, and $8 billion to pay down state debt is central to the Liberal Party’s plan to address these concerns.

This is the responsible thing for the Liberal-led State Government to do and is part of our economic plan to boost local employment opportunities for the next generation.

WILL POWER PRICES RISE?

Importantly there will be no increase in the cost of electricity for consumers. There will be no reduction in the safety and reliability of the electricity network as a result of the proposed public float of Western Power. Western Power is a regulated monopoly, which means a number of independent regulators oversee the various parts of the business, including safety, reliability, prices and performance, regardless of who owns Western Power. This will not change.

It will also be business as usual for workers at Western Power as strict employee protections will be outlined as part of the float process.
