In a very exciting initiative that I have been advocating for, the Liberals say ‘yes’ to a $1 million trial for youth in home mental health services in the Peel region (which includes the whole Baldivis Electorate) and the South West of WA.

Liberals say ‘yes’ to youth mental health service
• $1 million for trial of innovative youth mental health service
• Trial sites in Peel and South West regions
• More than 130 children and adolescents to have access to inhome mental health services
A re-elected Liberal Government will commit $1 million to trial a youth mental health ‘Hospital in the Home’ service in Peel and the South West.
Announcing the commitment today, Mental Health Minister Andrea Mitchell said the innovative $1 million trial will provide clinical care to young patients in their own home as an alternative to hospital admission.
“This initiative will see support being provided to children and adolescents experiencing mental health issues close to their families and loved ones,” Ms Mitchell said.
“Home can often be a better setting for the patients requiring treatment and it can take a lot of pressure off the parents, care-givers and other family members.
Ms Mitchell said this new model of inhome service will be preferable for many younger patients who would otherwise need to be admitted to hospital.
“For all intents and purposes, patients will be deemed to be hospital patients, but they will receive individualised hospital-level care in a home-based setting.”
Minister Mitchell said the South West and Peel were chosen for the trial because child and youth mental health was a significant community issue in these areas.
“Liberal candidate for Baldivis Malcolm George has been a strong advocate for new, innovative services in the Peel region to build on the strong work the Government has been doing in the area of mental health,” Ms Mitchell said.
• The Liberal-led Government has increased investment in mental health services in Western Australia by 84% to $865.8 million.
